Guts and Glory: The Making of the American Military Image in Film
Published in Paperback by University Press of Kentucky (June, 2002)
Author: Lawrence H. Suid
Average review score:

humungous & worth every word
This is a mighty tome that has something intelligent to say about virtually every war movie made in Hollywood, and even some that weren't from the Hollywood studios.

More amazing yet, where I have a good remembrance of, and a firm opinion about, a given movie, I find that Suid has hit the nail on the head with his comments. Especially notable was the treatment he gives to two fairly recent films, Saving Private Ryan and Pearl Harbor. Almost everyone I know, and the critics as well, hailed SPR as a work of genius. I thought it was dreck, that it got just about everything wrong that it could have gotten wrong, and finally I walked out of the film when the beleaguered Yank says he's run out of ammo and does anyone have any "bandoliers"? Over the course of half a dozen pages, Suid explains to my satisfaction exactly what I found SPR unsatisfying.

He even gives a preview of such very recent films as Blackhawk Down, and there too he's right on the money.

Full disclosure: I know Suid, because he interviewed me about a book that became a film that is mentioned (mostly favorably) in his text.

Handbook of Darters
Published in Hardcover by TFH Publications (October, 1984)
Author: Lawrence M. Page
Average review score:

A Must Have for Darter-Lovers
This is a MUST HAVE for anyone into North American Native Fishes, especially Darters. Although scientific data is a little out of date due to some nomenclatural restructuring, this is still one of my favorite books! It seems to cover ever species in great detail, and has more photos than you can drool on. I only wish Larry would do an update on it! Well worth the search, and well worth any price.

Handbook of Political Psychology
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (June, 2003)
Authors: David O. Sears, Leonie Huddy, Robert Jervis, Lawrence B. Slobodkin, and Suny Stony Brook
Average review score:

basic readable reference
This work is a self-conscious précis of the current professional norms of political psychology which loosely presents itself as applying what is best known in psychology to political science. In many ways political psychology puts a human face on social political processes that addresses motives as well as clusters of behavior needing explication that soft pedals reductive theory for more empirical observation quantified from many events and cultural circumstances. The essays in Handbook of Political Psychology serve to convey the general nature and range of the subject while also being a guide to the central issues and studies in the field. It belongs in every political science library.

I liked HARPO, THE BABY HARP SEAL because I like seals and I like snow. I also like the water when it's warm. I learned that baby seals can't nurse off other mother seals.

A terrific story by a master storyteller.

His investigation uncovers several untimely deaths connected with the school. As Eddie and Professor Harley Griggs (his mentor) search for answers, they discover evidence of a crime which could send shock waves through the small coastal town of St. Andrew. Is there really a ghost trapped in the "in between place" seeking Eddie's help? Will Eddie and Harley be able to unravel the mystery holding the key to freedom? Haunted High is the second volume of Lawrence Gordon's "The Ghost Chronicles" as continues to document him as a terrific storyteller and a gifted novelist. Also highly recommended is Gordon's first entry in the series, User Friendly.

Headache Help: A Complete Guide to Understanding Headaches and the Medicines That Relieve Them
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (June, 1995)
Authors: Lawrence D. Robbins and Susan S. Lang
Average review score:

This book is a marvelous guide for all headache sufferers.
I have suffered from daily tension headaches and weekly migraines for 15 years. This book provided information about headaches in general, and also gives very detailed descriptions of the various medications available. I was able to use the book to ask my doctor about treatments he had not considered. The most valuable information I received from reading Headache Help concerned the nature of headaches. Anyone who suffers from headaches would benefit from this book. If nothing else, you'll learn that others have similar problems and that there is help out there.
